Today, marks the beginning of the summer season. Today, the Earth’s axis are tilted about 23.4 degrees relative to the orbit around the sun. From March to September the Northern Hemisphere is tilted more towards the sun, driving its spring and summer months. Subsequently, from September till March, the axis are tilted away, resulting in the autumn and winter months. In the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are reversed.

In Malta today we record the longest brightest day ever throughout the year. This morning the sun was up (or had to be up) by 05:46. It had been a long time wish that on this day, I wanted to experience both sunrise and sunset. So far, I only experienced sunrise from the roof of my place, yet today I decided to get up early and drive towards the south eastern part of Malta to witness more closely sunrise.

The chosen spot was Zonqor Point in Marsascala. Yet, just my luck, even though I arrived much before sunrise, the weather was very blustery. I had planned to make use of my two mobile phones so as to record and film today’s sunrise to be live streamed on Instagram on one of them, and the other to create a timelapse. I also took my camera with me to shoot some photos. Yet unfortunately the first signs of the sun came much later than 05:46. I think it was about 30 minutes later that I got the first glimpse of the sun. Thankfully I managed to shoot some photos even though by this time the sun was high up.

Tonight, I made it to watch the sunset too. As a location, I chose my favourite spot in the Maltese Islands, the Tower overlooking the beach at Ghajn Tuffieha. The sun was down at 20:22 and that makes it 14 hours and 36 mins of daylight. As from today the daylight time will start diminishing little by little yet the summer evenings will still be bright, which is one of this season’s characteristics which I love most.
